Things to do in Las Vegas

This is a guest post by Amber Kingsley.

If you’re planning on travelling to the USA, Las Vegas is definitely a place you won’t want to miss. Not only is there an unbelievable amount of entertainment and nightlife to enjoy, there is also a great deal of history and natural beauty both in the city and in the surrounding area. Even if it is not the only place you visit in the United States, it definitely makes for a worthwhile weekend. For a uniquely American experience, here are some places you definitely won’t want to miss while in Las Vegas…

Entertainment and “the Strip”

  • The Bellagio– Known throughout the world for its synchronized fountains, the Bellagio also has celebrity-chef restaurants and some of the finest hotel amenities in the world.
  • Luxor– Famous for its pyramid shape, this casino features ancient Egyptian styled decor, and nightly shows by world-famous celebrities including Carrot Top, Jabbawockeez and Criss Angel.
  • Mandalay Bay– Featuring an authentic sandy beach, an enormous wave-pool and a 20,000 gallon saltwater aquarium, Mandalay Bay is one of the most interesting casinos on the strip.
  • Excalibur– For a getaway including knights, wizards, princesses and restaurants in medieval forests, Excalibur is the place to visit. For a dramatic, unforgettable dinner show, the Tournament of Kings features jousting, singing and fighting!

Dining

Also integral to the Las Vegas experience is dining. Many famous chefs have restaurants in the city, and there are also many world-class buffets and quirky menus to be found around town.

  • The Wynn Buffet– Voted the best restaurant in Las Vegas several years in a row, the Wynn Buffet offers something for everyone. Because of the huge menu diversity, this location is especially recommended for those travelling with children.
  • The Burger Bar at Mandalay Bay– Diversity and customization are key to the Burger Bar. Here you can build your own hamburger and milkshake.
  • Pink’s Hot Dogs Las Vegas– A very unique Las Vegas experience, Pink’s Hot Dogs has grown from its humble beginnings as a hot dog stand in Los Angeles to one of the most famous hot dog joints in the world! Here you can build your own hot dog (New York-style, Chicago-style and everything in between!) as well as hamburgers and chicken sandwiches.

Outside of Town

Despite the world-class entertainment and showy, raucous nightlife, many people who visit Las Vegas do so because of the surrounding landscape. Within a days’ drive, there are many other interesting things to do and see:

  • The Grand Canyon– Offering the most breathtaking sights in the USA, the Grand Canyon is undoubtedly one of the top tourist sites in the country. There is a huge variety of ways to experience the canyon including guided hikes, donkey rides and even helicopter tours!
  • The Hoover Dam– Only a 45 minute drive from Las Vegas, the Hoover Dam stands not only as a testament to modern engineering, but also as an important symbol of American history.
  • Death Valley– As the hottest place on Earth, Death Valley offers more than just heat. Dante’s View offers a hellish view of the Funeral Mountains and the Devil’s Golf Course, and tourists can even spend the night close to the dunes!
  • Rhyolite– Easily a day’s drive from the Vegas strip, Rhyolite offers a unique glimpse into the rugged past of the American West. Once a gold-rush oasis that quickly boomed into a successful town in the earth 20th century, it quickly dwindled into a ghost town after the last resident passed away in 1924.

Whether you’re planning on visiting Las Vegas soon or in the future, keep these activities in mind and you’ll have a great time!
